The Drakensberg is and always will be an amazing holiday venue. Lots to do and plenty of places to eat.
Scrumpy Jacks is overrated and I would skip this venue and rather go to The Valley Bakery for either a breakfast, lunch or snack - freshly baked and good value for money. The Dragons restaurant at Dragons Peak was our best meal of the trip and the menu is varied and well priced.
Lots of stunning hikes all around and plenty of places of interest to visit. Quad bikes, Scoot Tours, Canopy tours, Bird of Prey centre, Reptile centre, ceramic, candle & carpet weavers and the list goes on.

Such a lovely area for outdoor activities and also to just relax and refresh! Stunning hikes of varying length/difficulty - with some parts through a game reserve where you can spot giraffe, zebra, buck and a few other smaller animals. The Tugela river is really beautiful and great for swimming, tubing and kayaking. Also a decent OK Mini Mart in town for supplies and a couple of really sweet restaurants. Would definitely recommend a trip to Roots Clay Cafe for ceramic painting or just a nice meal and coffee. What a beautiful area! Will definitely be back!!

Berghaven was very central and close to the mountain, very nice restaurants in the area.
We had lovely experiences at Farmers Fork, Kabbo restaurant with best burgers in town, Waffle hut and Scrumpy Jacks for cheesecake. The chocolate bar is also a nice experience.

This area of the Drakensberg Mountains truly is exceptionally beautiful. There is a lot to do for active people , as well as interesting places to visit or be spoilt at, for the rest of us. The Farmer's Fork by day and The Saleyard at night are good restaurants.

A lovely small town with lots of activities.
A lovely small town with lots of activities. It is very cold so I would recommend dressing up warm even in Summer. The roads are not well managed so allow yourself extra travel time to avoid the pot holes. I will definitely give it a second run.
All went well. The property shows its age and the accommodations are not luxurious but we didn't need that. We wanted a comfortable place to stay in the Drakensberg Mountains and that is what we got so we were very satisfied. The hotel enabled us to stay in these mountains which was high on my list of places to see in South Africa so I was quite happy to have discovered and book this stay. The hiking in the mountain is marvelous. Lots of waterfalls, magnificent views.
Really nice getaway en route from Durban towards the Drakensburg / Johannesburg. I really liked the setting of the hotel, very much in the green. Staff is super friendly, the hotel room is fantastic with a nice bathtub, really great room, lots of thought through details, really liked it! Also, the place was super safe with a gate at the entrance (you are getting a remote control to go in and out without assistance).
An amazing rustic cottage overlooking the river. Beautiful interior, decent although basic facilities. A great place for a braai and a few bottles of wine at sunset. The perfect place to escape the outside world (no electricity, no internet) and explore the beautiful surroundings and enjoy the sounds of the wildlife. Winterton is close by (around 20 minutes or so by car) to stock up on supplies.
Self catering. Splendid view of the valley. Buck and baboons roaming freely in the estate. You couldnt get closer to the mountains without entering at Monks Cowell. Plenty of amenities within easy reach. The dam complete with hydro electric generator which doesnt detract from the rural setting. An interesting essential oil extraction plant producing oil from local herbs and trees
Winterton Country Lodge is a perfect half way stop between the Free State and the KZN South Coast when travelling through the Golden Gate park. Situated off the main road in a peaceful, secure forested area. The lodge is beautiful and the rooms were clean and comfortable. The breakfast was delicious. We will definitely return for a longer stay.
quiet room, spacious, everything available, tea, coffee and even cereals, very good communication and information from the hosts, only 5 km from Winterton on tar road, accessible by Sedan Vehicle. It is an excellent place to stay and relax on a quiet farm, I can fully recommend it
Lovely hotel with amazing staff. Very rarely do you come across such accommodating, service oriented, friendly staff in hotels. The chef is also amazing, we had breakfasts, lunches and dinners all of equal great standard and presentation!
Berghaven is a relaxing and peaceful area to stay We enjoyed it very much Wonderful place to stay when you visit the drakensberg region Cat Estelle and Debbie are so friendly and helpful Thanks alot We'll come back to Berghaven in future
The place is very central to all activities around the Drakensberg, the place is cosy and has all nessassary things. Hubby loved the braai area and we would deff go back. Good play ground for kids.
The home is very cozy and fully equipped to make our self catering pleasant. There is plenty of room for large families that need a retreat away from the rush of the city life.
The place and the accommodation were great and the owners were welcoming and friendly. Not far from Winterton, it's a great place for exploring Monks Cowl, Cathedral Peak etc.
The view is very nice and the staff outside that was giving away popcorn was very friendly and energetic. Just a pity about the interior of the hotel (mainly the rooms)
The hotel is in a great location - all meals (buffet-style) were very good - our chalet was spacious and very nice - the mountainous area around is spectacular.
A gem nestled outside Winterton with amazing views of the Drakensberg. The meerkat stole my heart instantly. Tranquil walks. African Grass Owl was a bonus
