AZZ Merida Medea, hotel in Merida

With a convenient location, close to the old roman bridge and just 20 minutes’ walk from the city centre, this modern 4-star hotel offers high-quality spacious luxurious accommodation.

Everything worked OK and the bed was comfy. All was quite clean and generally worked. It would benefit if maintenance replaced the seals in the sink plugs as they didn't hold water for very long but that is a minor gripe. Breakfast had a good selection of foods, the restaurant was clean and there were enough staff on duty which is gratifying to see as we recently stayed in a couple of Paradors where there was 1 person for over 50 guests. The breakfast option when booking the room here was good value.

FAQs about hotels in Merida

Small City with Impressive Roman Past

Mérida was founded as Augusta Emerita in 25 BC, the capital of the ancient Roman province of Lusitania. Located almost half-way between Madrid and Lisbon, it is nowadays an important historic centre, and the capital of the Spanish region of Extremadura. The ‘Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The city was founded in order to protect the Guadiana River pass, becoming the largest city on the Iberian Peninsula. Visigoths, Moors, the Christian ‘reconquista’, and the Napoleonic invasion left their mark too, and the city is nowadays home to the most complete Roman remains in Spain.

Its historic centre displays a mix of all these cultures, with the Roman Theatre and the Roman Bridge standing out. The Alcazaba is the old fortress of Roman origin, successively rebuilt by Visigoths and Moors. Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque buildings, as well as typical cobbled streets complete the picture. Some of the most charming hotels and B&Bs in Mérida are located in the Old Town.

The easiest way to get to the city is flying in to Seville or Madrid, and then by train to the local railway station. Whether you’re searching the best hotels or budget accommodation, don’t miss the Mérida deals available on Booking.com!

One full day is the minimum to visit the top tourist spots.

One full day is the minimum to visit the top tourist spots. Buy a ticket for all sites - it has no validity limit, you can visit each site once, but it does not have to be even the same year! So no stress, you will want to return here anyway :) Nice size for walking. Good food.

    We loved Merida!

We loved Merida! There is so much amazing history and it is all very easily accessible by walking. The city’s 17 euro ticket also makes it amazing value. The city is also quaint with cobbled stones, and it is a more genuinely Spanish experience, where most people don’t speak English and costa are more reasonable. I paid 1 euro for a takeaway coffee!

Probably one of the best antiquities museums in Spain.

Probably one of the best antiquities museums in Spain. There is much to see in this city including a Roman bridge, the alcazar, the Temple of Diana and especially the amphitheater and arena. The crowning glory is the museum as well as a Roman house.

The city is very walkable especially along the river and aqueducts. If interested in history the city has done an excellent job at showcasing its Roman history including a wonderful Museum. The city is a living "open air" museum. A combined ticket for multiple sites in 16Euros/8Euros for Seniors. We visited 7 sites.

Merida was a mecca for Roman history.

Merida was a mecca for Roman history. The museum was particularly beautiful with carefully selected pieces on display. It was easy to walk to all the major sites. We loved a gourmet supermarket opposite the museum and the first eatery in front of it. We took the tourist train at the last minute and it was a great way to get a feel for Merida and the location of all the sites.

    A pretty, nice town.

A pretty, nice town. I liked the Roman bridge, the river, the sidewalk along the river, the Roman Theatre, amphitheatre, the Iberian bellota ham and pork. I had some good Iberian pork dishes, such as pluma, carrillada... So tasty! People are very friendly!

I should have said whilst there but I didn’t want to spoil our stay. We have used Booking.com extensively and have been happy with your business model. However, the Merida wasn’t clean, the bathroom was disgusting with urine stains around the toilet, the floor hadn’t been swept and my wife found hair around her bed. The standard was poor, there was no service at all. It was more expensive than the Parador in Salamanca where we are staying tonight and I wish I had booked two nights here rather than stopping at Merida.

We booked the Parador over two years ago as we were attending the Stone Music Festival at the Teatro Romano! With the concert being canceled due to the pandemic, we had no problem pushing the dates to 2021. The location was perfect and the hotel had very spacious and comfortable rooms and amenities. The staff was friendly and accommodating and both mornings we were greeted by any staff member with “buenos días”…we look forward to a return stay in Mérida as well as many other paradores throughout Spain.

A pleasant hotel on the edge of Merida (30 mins walk to the town centre, 20 mins to facilities including cafes and , of course, tapas!) The hotel has a swimming pool and it had the feel of a resort hotel, with lots of Spanish families on holiday there Nice, authentic Spanish feel Very good buffet breakfast - easy to negotiate Lots of free on-site parking Merida itself is amazing - chock full of old Roman ruins Staff very nice and friendly I had a really good time here

The apartment is right in the center of Merida, in walking distance to the primary attractions. If you travel there by car, you also have a parking in the same street or another one two streets aside. The apartment is more than enough to stay a few nights, it has a kitchen, a good bathroom and it's in a calm area. The building also seems renovated recently which gives a good impression. The recepcionist was very helpful and nice.

The hotel is magnificent as far as room space and style! The large room was terrific and there was free parking available. The old town of Roman ruins is interesting, however, quite a hike on foot. A taxi can be called at a reasonable cost. The area is residential so not much for tourists.
