This was our third visit to this property.
Fantastic ski in ski out location.
Staff very helpful, and more and more speak English.
High standard of room amenities available to select in the foyer - body lotion, face masks etc.
First time staying on a lower floor not in “comfort room 5F” and it was totally fine.
Great views from the picture window out over the snow.
Excellent to be able to do some laundry - washers free, driers very reasonably priced. BYO detergent.
A 3-minute walk from the Hasuike Ski Resort, the Shiga Lake Hotel boasts Japanese-style rooms with majestic mountain and lake views, and natural hot spring baths.

The included breakfast was great, though it would be great if there was a little variety from day to day. Staff were fantastic (including gorgeous golden retriever who sought out pats from everyone). The suites were large which was great for a group who benefited from two separate sleeping areas. Comfy beds. Very convenient location next to the Yamanoeki as well as ski in / ski out access (it took a few days to work this out however, overall Shiga Kogen is confusing on first arrival). The hotel's onsen area is amazing, great after a day of skiing. As a side trip visit the Monkey Park! It's a long walk in but worth it.

Great location, a short walk from the main slope. Bus stop is pretty much just out front. The rooms are basic but comfortable, and ours was actually fairly big. Good buffet breakfast in the main hall. Also has an onsen which we used regularly. There is a ski gear hire place in the basement. Good value for money accommodation relative to other ski fields in Nagano prefecture.
As a word of advice, there aren't many independant places open for dinner in Shiga Kogen - a lot of the local visitors eat dinner in the hotels and the dinner service finishes early by western standards for ski areas. And on a Sunday night barely anything was open! So if you have young kids, or hungry adults, you need to lock in reservations ahead of time, or book in at the hotels.
Kumanoyu Hotel offers free WiFi throughout and has easy access to the Shiga Kogen Kumanoyu Ski Resort. Located in a tranquil area surrounded by mountains, the hotel boasts a public hot spring bath.
Located a 7-minute walk from Yudanaka Train Station, Hotel Housei offers free WiFi access, indoor/outdoor hot spring baths and air-conditioned Japanese-style rooms.

The owner was so lovely and accommodating. He clearly explained everything to us and dropped us off at both the Monkey Park and Train Station on our departure.
It was great that we could book the private onsen. The owner also gave us the key to the public onsen which is just across the road.

Location just in the center of the most interesting part of the town - very convenient for an evening walk which is gorgeous.
The traditional Japanese setting is very interesting to see. The private onsen by the room is beautiful you could spend a lot of time in it and relax. Dinner is fantastic, splendid service, very tasty food. Breakfast is also very good but not on-par with the dinner. Overall, highly recommended.

Might be better in winter, but in spring only thing to see was monkey park, and that only takes a few hours ( mostly travel time) as it isn’t very big. I was of impression it was a whole mountain, but it is just one small area you see the monkeys from.
I’d suggest staying in nagano which was nice, and coming to Yamanouchi for a morning.

While Yamanouchi is known for its proximity to snow monkeys,...
While Yamanouchi is known for its proximity to snow monkeys, it wasn't what stood out to me about the area. The snow monkeys just have too many tourists to be truly enjoyable. Yamanouchi has beautiful mountain views, charming winding streets with quirky decorations, and onsen hopping among different ryokans is something to look forward to. If you look behind the main street, you'll see many stairways leading to many shrines. We had dinner at a sushi restaurant ran by an elderly couple, on traditional tatami floors. It felt like eating at someone's house, and they absolutely stuffed us with delicious sushi. Two nights would probably be the best to fully wind down.

Amazing amount of terrain in the ski fields.
Amazing amount of terrain in the ski fields. Need to have better maps (in English) available for the runs. A (live) board showing which lifts and runs are open would be great, prior to entering the areas.
The snow was amazing!!!!
Restaurants were good however the area appeared to be directed at locals (Japanese) rather than tourists. We had to do a lot of work to find somewhere to eat.
It would be great to have some public onsens available in the area.

Our stay at a ryokan just couple miles from Snow Monkey Park...
Our stay at a ryokan just couple miles from Snow Monkey Park was the absolute highlight of a trip filled with highlights. Specifically we stayed at Onyado Hishiya Torazo, and loved everything about it - the room, the food, the staff, and the oh so relaxing onsen! We made the mistake of only booking one night and the short turn around combined with outside temps down in the low 20’s (F) meant we never did try any of the public onsen. Trust me - two days here is the minimum!
Snow Monkey Park ended up being another highlight (and between my wife and I, we have about 1,000 pictures to prove it!). Before going we were concerned that it might seem contrived at best and a bad situation for the monkeys at worst. But they were absolutely there of their own free will and happily making use of the large onsen on a cold winter’s day. Get there early - we got there about an hour after opening and wished we’d been an hour earlier. It started to fill up about 20 minutes after we got there.
Here’s the weird thing, and the only downside - and I don’t quite know how to explain it. The town was basically closed! And we were there Jan 26-27, a decent snow had fallen a couple days earlier and a light snow fell the morning of the 27th. I thought this would be big tourist season, but we barely saw another sole in town. And those few we did see were almost all tourists out taking pictures in their yukata. This made for a very quiet morning, which was great. But we had planned to pick up our luggage at the ryokan after visiting the monkey park and meander through town stopping to eat, drink, or shop as we made our way to the train station. But nothing was open so we caught an earlier train and ate in Nagano while waiting for our Shinkansen.

The Ryokan Biyunoyado was just fabulous.
The Ryokan Biyunoyado was just fabulous. They have shuttle bus to and from station. also to the snow monkeys. We were late and they returned to station to collect us. Onsens were great. The food was amazing and plenty of it. Japanese style room was very comfortable and beds made up when we were at dinner. Definitely stay here when you come to see the snow monkeys. it’s the best.

Its a great spot for visiting the snow monkeys and a quick snow board at Ryuoo Ski Resort. A walk through the older Shibu Onsen town is also fun for people who like that. We went to three different restaurants in the town and they were all good.
The negatives were that the roads and paths were slippery with ice, so bring appropriate footware if visiting in winter (although your hotel might have some).
Almost all places were cash only.
Nestled in the heart of the town, Hotel Hosei offers a delightful blend of elegance and comfort. From the moment I stepped off the train, I was greeted with a warm welcome and impeccable service from the staff. The stylishly appointed traditional Japanese rooms coupled with the rooms' personal onsen, attentive staff and convenient location, made for an unforgettable stay. Whether you're visiting for business or pleasure, Henn na is sure to exceed your expectations and leave you longing for a return visit.
The staff at the Omodaka could not have been more helpful. The room was great, spacious and clean and comfortable. The facilities, including an Onsen, were fabulous but it was the attitude of the staff that made our stay such a great experience. We were collected from Yudanaka station and given a lift to the start of the Snow Monkey trail.
We also had dinner at the Hotel, which was another great experience and also great value.
The hotel has the Japanese architecture style which is brilliant and the rooms are amazingly spacious. We had mountain views and it was spectacular to wake up and see the snow fall outside our window.
The staff members are fabulous and liking to help with anything we asked for.
The breakfast is delicious on both options, Japanese and western.
Loved everything about this hotel.
Staff were so lovely and accommodating. We had a lot of questions which they didn't mind answering and used a translator on their phone as did we. When checking in to our room we were given tea and a welcome treat and the staff member explained the hotel facilities to us and how to wear the Yukata which can be worn around the town if you want to use the onsens
- great value for the money, in a nice onsen town, close to several activities and sightseeing locations
- room is confortable and very spacious, perfect for a family of 4, private bathroom is a plus
- all hotel shared spaces are roomy and cosy, a lot of cool amenities (darts, soccer table...)
- staff is really nice
- good breakfast
Lovely ryokan, we had traditional room on the third floor, sleeping on futon was quiet an experienced.
hotel is located in a town with 9 onsen, you can visit them for free wearing traditional yukata wooden clogs which hotel is kudly providing. Great experience, will definitely stop by if I have a chance to visit this area.
Ideally located
Good value for price
Nice combo : breakfast/dinner + onsen on premises
The hotel has a nice bar and it was great to finish the ski day with a beer... we were however alone :-)
Really recommend to book breakfast and dinner as there are not many restaurant around and they ae usually fully booked.
Great budget rustic authentic experience. Ability to have a private onsen at the hotel as well as the hotels separate onsen. Hint- male side is heaps better than female side. Jealous. Proximity to snow monkeys , onsens and quaint onsen town all great. Not luxurious but rooms large
still great
It looked great, very japanese style. They provided yukatas to use in the hotel and at town. We had access to the onsen in the hotel, which was beautiful and really confortable, and also acces to the onsens around the town. The staff was great, very friendly and welcoming. The food was amazing.
The building is charming and set in a maze of small streets in the onsen town. The private onsen was wonderful. We were able to use it both days we were staying at the ryokan. The owner is very welcoming and gave our son origami as a souvenir.
Wafu-no -Yado Masuya is excellent.
The staff is very helpful and patient with our lack of Japanese language skills. The onsens in the lodging are amazing and the town of Shibu Onsen couldn’t be more welcoming. Highly recommend this ryokan.
The room was the traditional style Ryokan, large space with comfortable futons and seating area. A heater was provided. The hotel had a private onsen (but it was Very hot). The late check-in was useful and the staff were friendly.
Our stay at this traditional Ryokan was exceptional. The hotel is beautiful. The onsen's are beautiful and relaxing. The food was delicious. Highly recommend staying here if you're looking for a traditional ryokan experience.
A bit of a walk to the town.
Hotel takes you to the Monkey park but you have to take the public bus back to town then walk to the hotel. I was surprised they didn't pick you back up.
everything is great. especially the staff and the outdoor onsen. great town too. the hotel provides free pickup service from and to the station and snow monkey park. highly recommend!
Located very close to Yudanaka Station, responsive staff, well heated room, indoor Onsen and sauna included. Inside the hotel there is an Izakaya restaurant on 1st floor
Friendly staff that was very accommodating, they explained everything perfectly and helped out if there was any need of help with anything around town or in the hotel!
onsen was amazing and so was the authentic Japanese culture. Although not a big fan of Japanese breakfasts the effort the hotel went to at breakfast was outstanding
