After having stayed a night in Iquitos, I wanted to experience the jungle and decided to stay at a lodge. I am thrilled that I chose the Jacamar lodge - not necessarily for the lodge (basic and rustic accommodation, fairly priced), but because of the fantastic staff at the lodge and the amazing tour guide. I booked a night at the lodge, and was soon contacted to arrange a guide through the lodge (a must do, as it is difficult to explore independently). My guide Christian knew the jungle inside out, spotted so many animals, was telling beautiful stories about the life in the jungle, and was very knowledgable about the plants and animals. In my two days in the jungle I did a jungle walk, night walk to spot reptiles (saw frogs, snakes, tarantulas, other spiders, bats, etc.), a 5:30 am sunset birdwatching cruise, dolphin spotting, and we went to a rescue center for monkeys rescued from the exotic animal trade. Please note that these were the activities that I wanted to do - Christian said from the beginning that I can chose what to do, and he will guide me. The activities were exceptional, but even the boat rides through the big and small rivers framed by dense forest, looking to spot animals and hearing about life in the jungle was magical. The food at the lodge was very good. At the beginning they asked me about allergies and if I don't eat specifc things - I only eat fish and vegetarian food, and they cooked me great meals using the regional ingredients from the jungle.

The family room is perfect for a family with 2-3 kids. Many other places don't have a pool and let me tell you -- the pool is a lifesaver to cool down in the hot afternoons! Our English-speaking guide did a great job personalizing daily adventures each day, from ziplining to visiting wild animals. The food was phenomenal! The chef was able to accommodate our pescatarian diet. Overall, they welcomed us like family and we would recommend the Avatar for a once in a lifetime experience!
