The location is excellent. Close to the fortress, as well as the old town. I loved the old Ottoman-era house and vibe. The view of the mosque from the terrace was just stunning. The hosts were very friendly and acommodating.

The town is beautiful and interesting for its fortified houses. Also is on UNESCO list. The old centre is very pleasant to walk around, it has an atmosphere. Car traffic was quite problematic, the roads between the houses are very narrow and very steep. Also, Google maps did not have good enough background and often led us somewhere where, for example, instead of a road was staircase. The old stone roads were very slippery in the rain ;-) Ono or two night is enought to stay here.

Albanian thoughts:
Albanian thoughts:
Spent a week here in April 2024 – so many positives …
Purely electronic passport gates at Tirana airport – an advantage if low on passport stamp space? Swift bus into town centre. Euros very widely accepted, 1:1 with the local Lek currency. Felt safe, met many great people and enjoyed a lot of raki; wine rather so-so, beer better … Trains are close to non-existent; negotiating the minibus service involves arriving and paying on the spot – found it straightforward; typical price: Tirana to Gjirokastra – 4 hours - £10 ..; saw stunning mountain scenery in last 2 hours, and when crossing the mountains from this town to Sarande port (1hr15, £3.30). Accommodation costs very favourable: enjoyed flats at £9 pppn. From Sarande, easy enough to catch a ferry or hydrofoil to Corfu, as a return airport – ca/ £20 single, 30-60 mins. Albaniatourguide proved a very useful online resource. Looking forward to next trip: apparently 12 degrees even in January …

Only had time to visit the castle. Spent several hours there. Would love to come back for the folk arts festival and visit some of the houses with the specific architecture that put this place on the UNESCO list.

The city is pretty but unfortunately the vast majority of it...
The city is pretty but unfortunately the vast majority of it is rundown with only the bazaar and some houses being maintained to a level fit for a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and once you go away from the bazaar especially at night it feels really lonely and sad. Gjirokaster has become very touristic in the past few years with the old bazaar being constantly crowded with youths from Western European countries who do not respect the place and openly smoke hashish and get drunk.
The road to get to the old town is a traditional stone path that while beautiful is a disaster because it destroys your car's suspension, has very steep grades and if another car comes from the other direction good luck! Because of this and the lack of parking in the old town (even among hotels that advertise having parking) you become a prisoner of the old town. During the summer because of the type of stone the city is built of (also found in the mountain Gjirokaster is built on) it is very hot even during the night making the entire experience very unpleasant.
Most museums/attractions are basic and the few English descriptions that can be found are very nationally charged which reminds me more of the rhetoric of the 1940s than 2023. The vast majority of Albanians, even those who work in this "tourism industry" cannot speak English at all or speak it very badly making communication difficult and moreover they are not really friendly with tourists.
Gjirokaster like Albania in general is about as expensive as Greece or even Italy while effectively offering a touristic product akin to a 3rd world country. Unless corruption is rooted out, Albanians stop emigrating and the economy and democratic institutions develop I frankly do not think I will ever visit Gjirokaster again.
English: The place was very clean and well kept. The host was so nice and a great. They helped us with our luggage and fed us fruit after our long drive to Gjirokaster. I would reccomend this pace to everyone.
Këtë ritëm do ua rekomandoja të gjithëve.
This hotel is gorgeous- everything is immaculate and so lovely. Beautiful blond wood everywhere, accented with lovely albanian textiles. Our room was perfect and had the most stunning view of the Gjirokastra valley. Tatiana and her son were so kind and welcoming and made sure we were as comfortable as could be. Tatian greeted us every morning and made us a splendid breakfast. There can’t possibly be a lovelier hotel in Gjirokastra!
One of my most favourite nights in Albania. The most gorgeous hotel in gjirokaster. Tatiana, the host, was so friendly and helpful and in the morning you get a home cooked breakfast which exceeds any hotel breakfast anywhere - it was amazing. There’s parking available but it’s within walking distance of everything in the town. We absolutely loved our stay and will definitely be back. Highly recommend staying at this beautiful hotel
One of the best rooms we have ever booked! We liked it so much!! Very clean and beautiful room, perfect location (near to the center). The owners very friendly and the did the best for us. We ate also dinner in the hotel's restaurant and we ate delicious and traditional albanian food!! The breakfast was full!! Our room (double deluxe) had perfect view and was perfect decorated! 🥰
The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable, breakfast was lovely, and owner was incredible – the hotel is about a 15 minute walk to the old town center, and so he offered rides in and out of town at the drop of a hat. All I had to do was call or message him and he'd pick me up within 5-10 minutes. Amazing service and definitely recommend for anyone visiting Gjirokaster.
An amazing little hotel. Staff was super friendly and helped so much even with my early arrival. The bed was very comfortable and the shower was clean and there was very good water pressure. Would highly recommend it if you are in the area it's just a short walk in old town. My room had a beautiful view of the castle and the snow-capped mountains.
Clean, large, nicely furnished apartment with great views. Good communication with owner who helped with parking, which was important as the parking and driving in Gjirokaster is extremely challenging! Anyone who has mobility issues would definitely struggle to walk up and down into town - it's up a fairly steep hill.
Staff was smiley and very helpful at the hotel. They prepared a nice breakfast for us for the requested time which was earlier than their standard breakfast time. Staff helped to carry my luggage to the room and also helped after check-out to carry close to our car due to stone streets.
Location is perfect, as well as the room, bathroom and the swimmingpool. the hotel is brandnew, and located only a few minutes walking from the castle.
Gjirokaster is a really nice village to visit and stay for a few days. swimmingpool is an extra benefit, because it gets really hot.
We had the best experience at the Guest House Hostel VAL-MAR. The rooms were clean, very comfortable, and the staff were super friendly, always there when needed. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone visiting Gjirokaster. Will definitely stay here again, thank you so much!
The hotel is in the main street of gjirokaster where bars and restaurants are around, and has free parking just opposite. Walking in the old town is not far. The bed was very comfortable and the room very clean and the stuff very friendly. I'd come again
Exceptional view of Gjirokaster from the hotel room veranda. Swimming pools with the same view. Very good food both for breakfast and dinner. The air conditioning in the room had been switched on before our arrival so the room was nicd and cool.
We were really glad that we found this little cosy hotel, built with love. Beautiful place, quiet, clean! All the family very nice and kind. We deffinetly recommend it and if one day we go to Gjirokaster again, we will stay there.
Thank you.
Good hotel. Rooms in classic style and very tasteful. Very good breakfast. The owner Klementi is an informed and very communicative person. The hotel is located in the old part of the city and everything we were in Gjirokastër for was nearby
Perfect Stay in Center of Gjirokaster
Everything: cleanliness, design, position (right in the center) and kindness of the Manager (Mr. Toni). Parking spot available near by. We are going to recommend this hotel for a stay in Gjirokastër
Brand new and comfortable hotel. Perfect to explore Gjirokaster. The managers, Martin & David, were very welcoming and helpful at all times.
The breakfast with views in the balcony was really good!
A really cool way to experience Gjirokaster. You really are staying in the 1800’s. Fun to light a fire and keep warm .
The place is big and really a unique experience.
Wonderful typical hotel
Super friendly staff
Room and bathroom super clean
All in typical Albania style
Nice view at the balcony
Nice breakfast under the vine
