Commonly spelled Fez, this city was Morocco’s capital during Middle Ages. The city was originally composed of two separate settlements located along the banks of the Jawhar River. Madinat Fas was founded in 789 by Idris I, while Al-'Aliya was founded by his son Idris II. Both towns grew autonomously until the Almoravids unified them in 1070 under the name ‘Fas’. The city is still considered a beacon of the Islamic civilisation, due to its ancient ‘madrasas’ Islamic colleges.
The Old Town or ‘medina’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, representing one of the best preserved historic centres in the world. The famous ‘riads’ or small traditional hotels are located in the medina, which is also called Fes Al-Bali.
The city can be reached through Fès Saïss Airport, or from the airports in Casablanca and Rabat via railway or bus connection. Whether you’re looking for a luxury hotel in Fez New Town or a historic ‘riad’ in the medina, don’t miss Booking.com’s wide offering!
I travel frequently. Fez, and Morocco in general, is underwhelming. While several day trips are possible, the main attraction in Fez is the Medina. It is interesting to walk through it but after a few hours I had enough. You cannot enter most attractions (Mosques, University) so you're left wandering the Medina. The shops are diverse in terms of merchandise but they are overly aggressive and often rude.

I lived in Fes for five years, so I will be biased.
I lived in Fes for five years, so I will be biased. I love this city and it has a special place in my heart. I learned Arabic here over 20 years ago, I came back some years later and worked as an English teacher and Arabic to English translator, and my recent visit was a visit for the peace of my soul.
If you are going to visit with a family, I would recommend an apartment in the new city (la Ville Nouvelle), especially the two that I stayed in. The old city (the Medina) is not easy to navigate with a stroller and the facilities in the riyads there are not family friendly (unless you are willing to pay top dollar), to say the least. Staying in the Medina means roughing it, so if you're young and single, or a young couple with no children, maybe you can hack it.
For food, I highly recommend Jawhara Cafe next to the American Language Centre (Rue Ahmed Hiba) for breakfast (great harsha, malawi, coffee, tea etc.) and Restaurant Florence on Rue Hassan II for lunch or dinner; they make amazing couscous, tagine, and every great Moroccan dish at great prices.

What an amazing city - filled all the senses .. such warm hospitality, amazing food and history abounds - the artisans and craftsmanship of the local people was astounding - I loved every minute during my stay from the getting lost in the Medina's alley's to exploring the historic city - My tour guide Hassan was magnificent - so spoiled by all his knowledge and ability to read his customers.... We so enjoyed all his recommendations and more importantly - all the knowledge he shared with us - Please make sure you allocate enough time in this beautiful city and enjoy the hidden Roads and their restaurants! The food and spices are simply amazing!

Fez is good just for a day and it’s good to go to chefchouien from there for a day trip. Be careful of the people who take you to the tanneries and local outlets where they overcharge for stuff. The Medina has lots of shops having cheaper stuff of similar quality so better to check in different places before buying. Food is very good everywhere. Taxis are cheap. Place is very safe.

just dont. Morocco has a lot more good cities to spent time. If you really want to see then 1 day would be plenty but for me even this duration might be too long. In this city you always need to be on your toes or else you are an easy target for people who wants to just squeze money out of you
Riad Fes Aicha is the best place to stay.
It is very close to the entrance of the Medina (the most interesting attraction of Fez).
The host Omar is very kind, helpful and very nice.
The breakfast is very good, plentiful, full of fresh and homemade food. Moreover, on the morning of our departure, the flight was at 6 a.m. and Omar prepared a take-away breakfast for us (even if it wasn’t the breakfast hours).
The room was comfortable.
Omar gave us numerous recommendations.
We highly recommend this hotel.
The location : you are in the oldest part of the medina and it's easy to find your way to the riad.
The rooms are decent size, actually comfortable size if you are 2. We ordered diner and while we though 15 euro per person was expensive, this was actually the best dinner we have had in Morocco. You would pay much more in Marrakesh for touristic place food which is crap.
The manager was friendly. He came to pick me from the train station which was great because you can overpay as a tourist.
We had the luck and honour to stay for 2 nights in the sublime private riad in the Palais de Fes. The setting is incredibly authentic, the staff is superfriendly, they really make you feel at home together with providing an excellent service. The location is superb at the entrance of the medina, with impressive views over the city. On all criteria this hotel is excellent and that s the first time I give a global 10 on 10! Bravo to the whole team working there and the family behind.
Everyone at the property was very hospitable and friendly. This was our first trip to Morocco, and they helped us with booking our taxi to/from the airport, trip to Chefchaouen, and guided tour of Fez. They’re extremely trust-worthy and have greatly elevated the quality of our time here. Stay at Dar Hafsa if you want to have a worry-free and pleasant travel and hotel experience. I couldn’t recommend more.
everything was perfect. Our host Namir went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and at home. He even helped us park our car. He gave us tips to stay safe in Fes. The dinner was amazing! Seriously the best Tagine we had during our time in Morocco. He also gave us great advice in buying carpets/handicraft in the Medina. The Dor itself was clean and overall we very much enjoyed our stay with Namir.
Breakfast was exceptional and it felt more like being treated in a Michelin Star Restaurant. Very much impressed with the quality of food and presentation. The entire Riad is exceptionally beautiful with emphasis on privacy and never felt being in a hotel. Got upgraded to Calife Suite with private patio. No doubt, the best place to stay in the entire Medina of Fes !!! Rooftop bar was definitely a treat.
Riad Diamant De Fes was the best experience during my entire Morocco vacation and I recommend it to Anyone looking to have a relaxed stay.
Great interior , absolutely clean, amazing rooftop and perfectly located in the middle of the Medina but still quite - and on top of that the breakfast is delicious.
The service is also perfect as the staff understands their job and knows what good service means.
We have had a great stay at Omar's Riad! Very welcoming, helpful and truthful! Located in the heart of the medina, Omar will give you any valuable tips you may need.
The room was tidy, comfortable and we did not miss anything.
Breakfast was amazing and among the best we have had in Morocco so far, thank you!
We definitely recommend everyone to stay here while in Fes.
Merci !

The hotel manager Mr. Reibal is a true professional who loves his job. All his work is focused on the satisfaction of his guests. Riyadh is in a very convenient location. Just outside and near the Medina. No need to look for a hotel in narrow streets. The staff is very attentive. Together with Mr. Reibal they are very attentive to help with everything.
It was one of the greatest places we stayed during our trip through Morocco. Very kind and nice people who are running the place.
The riad is very beautifull inside and you have direct access to the medina of Fes through some seperate exit.
If you stay there we can only highly recommend to eat dinner in the riad once. It was one of the best we got.
Fes is quite the old town of streets. Thank goodness someone met us, always needed a guide to go in and our of this Riad, but it is very cheap to get one. The hotel is exceptional and exquisite. The tile, painted ceilings, to the beautiful pool in the entry. The staff were very nice. The breakfast and dinners were very good. Highly recommend.
The whole experience was exceptional! The staff were extremely friendly helpful and attentive, the breakfast was amazing, the riad was very neat and comfortable, and the location is perfect since it's in the middle of the medina. Stayed at a few riads in Morocco and all of them were great, but this one was definitely the best!
Location is the best: only three minutes walk to Bab Boujloud, main access to the medina of Fez. You will never get lost. Enjoying one or two nights in the Moroccan Riad is a worthy experience. The host is a very friendly and helpful. The local welcoming mint tea is impressed, Breakfast is good. Highly recommended.
very comfortable hotel, large clean room. nice outdoor terrace. location was a comfortable walk to the medina (25mins) or to the centre of Fes.
good place to stay to explore if you like walking.
makes a very pleasant change from staying in riads at the end of our Morocco visit.
They gave us a nice room upgrade.
Our arrival in Fes and first days in Morocco wouldn’t have been the same without Abdoul. He received us very late at night, and called a restaurant to prepare food for us as everything was already closed at that time.
He helped us to find many places at the Medina.
The Riad is nice, and don’t miss the terrace.
Rooms were clean, Breakfast was delicious, location was so close to Medina. Most importantly Syed was the best host you can hope for! He helped us with a guide, told us the best places to check out, Gave tips on bargaining. Felt very much home and we are coming back to the same place when we come back to Fez.
We had a great stay in the best place in Fes ever, very welcoming staff, wonderful view from the terrace, you can also have meals in it like breakfast, lunch, drinks and dinner, easy location next to Bab Rcif the entre of the old medina just 50 metr.
Great Dar (traditional Hotel), quiet with just 2 minutes walk from the Old Fés Medina. Service was impeccable. Special shout out for Karim and his brother for their kind help and exchanges! If I go back to Fez, I will see I out Dar Victoria.
Best rooms, best breakfast, and the best service I experienced in Morocco. Thank you, Driss, especially, for making Fes have a special place in our hearts. We all hope to come back here soon!
Best part of the stay in Fes! In the Old City, quite close to the Medina and surrounding attractions. Beautiful place & amenities. Loved it. Absolutely loved the helpful staff.
