Incredible archeology sites within 20 minutes by taxi: Chan Chan merits a visit of 2-3 hours, same for La Huaca de la Luna. It's more like a 2 hour drive to reach el Brujo, another amazing site. Trujillo itself has a really nice old town with a gorgeous cathedral, buzzing main plaza, and lively pedestrian streets. Good restaurants, especially Al Dente Trattoria. We were in Trujillo for 2 days, 3 nights which was about right . The archeological sites nearby are well worth it, the square is pretty, nice colors And architecture , and there are good restaurants. Definitely stay around the square. That said, I wouldn’t make a special trip here unless you are needing to stop on the way North or South or you are an archeology person. One day we went to Huanchaco which was a bit of a disappointment- very scrappy town , interesting sort of.. but honestly don’t expect a charming beach town . The surrounding area is depressing. We did see the classic boats near the pier and had high hopes for a restaurant “Big Ben” It had great 3rd floor views, was clean and pleasant service but the food and uninspired menu a bland disappointment. Prices were high for the area . We weren’t sure if the other restaurants were safe for Gringo stomachs ! No Uber , taxis are cheap . It is a phenomenal city but there is a lot of crime and I think it best to only be out and about with a local citizen who knows when and where trouble is brewing.
