We are Americans so we had really little knowledge of Shirahama as a resort city. It was at the tail end of a 3 week tour of Japan and was very restful. Fortunately, we were there after Golden Week and before the main tourist season, so it was quiet and relaxing. We had fun over two nights at a local Turkish restaurant, Blue Bar. We'd recommend it. Also, the beach seemed quite nice although we had one day or rain so we didn't hang out there. While this wouldn't be a regular stop for Americans, I think it is worthwhile and an easy train ride to the airport in Osaka.

You will need a few days to visit all the places that Shirahama has to offer.
The beach if fabulous, heard that the sand was import from Perth, Australia. is great, white and fine.
There is a few spots to eat, but not too family oriented, maybe it was because we went off season.
The onsens around the area are ideal to relax and recover energy. Check out the feet onsen over looking Engetsuto Island.

Beautiful beach, awesome landscapes, and great restaurants.
Beautiful beach, awesome landscapes, and great restaurants. Highly recommend visiting the Sandanbeki cliffs, gorgeous views. Also go to Ashiato if you want delicious American style sandwiches. Look for the "American Sando" banners/signs right by the Shirahama Beach bus stop. There is a small aquarium that is nice and a very interesting fertility shrine called "kanki" that you should visit as well. If you come in August you might be able to catch some phenomenal fireworks. The bus is very easy to use, it basically just goes up and down the coast, where most everything you want to see/do is.
There are some theme parks and onsens too but we didn't have time for them, unfortunately.

Shirahama can be reached from Osaka by many accommodations. You can use a direct bus from Namba or you can use JR trains to reach there (whether it's local or rapid). The white sand beach was very much worth considering the location near the city (Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Wakayama).

A beautiful beach resort with some great scenery, nice soft sand and clear blue water. Does have some sea weed floating around and watch out for late afternoon when the jelly fish are around in summer time. When there are less people in the sea - it’s time to get out.
There was a fireworks display in the evening with music playing out speakers. Simply amazing to watch from the beach!! It doesn’t happen everyday so plan ahead.
There were market stalls providing food in the evening however unsure if it is a daily or weekend occurrence.
Local bars/eateries had friendly people , staff and locals alike were nice. There is a family mart just off from the beach front. Some bars are open late.
You need to either take a bus from the train station which takes longer but is cheaper or a taxi which is much faster but also more costly- ¥1,500 roughly. It’s too far to walk if you’re staying near the beach and in the summer heat it’s really not recommended.
It’s really nice for families , couples and groups of friends. If you’re a solo traveller and you enjoy your own company you’ll be fine.

Nice clean beach (maybe a little small), Good for 1 or 2 day beach trip. The rest of the city interly hotels. Restaurants and city very old (timetravel) ruined atmosphere. Defnitly nothing for shopping or good food. So Beach yes, Rest no
Loved the onsen area. It has 3 levels below and the lowest part you can enjoy the sea view!
The design in the hotel reception area was unfussy yet elegant, with gatcha machines, bakery and the souvenir shop in one area.
We booked the "Residence" part but even that was very good - the self-service kitchen looked chic, views were amazing, and the couch area was spacious. Appreciate the vending machine and honour-system shop area!
Location is super convenient in the middle of town, near the bus stops, beach, and restaurants. The owner also speaks Mandarin, so we were able to communicate and she provided a lot of recommendations. For English speakers, she has translations prepared too for check in etc. She was very accommodating and made delicious breakfast meals. Room was very clean and comfortable, perfect to relax in after onsen hopping in town.
The room was clean and spacious. The amenities were great! My children enjoyed playing table tennis at the hotel and having some free ice cream after :D There are several very clean onsen options indoor, open air, large onsen and low temperature. They are open through the night - I went at midnight and it was empty, I had the onsen to myself :) Hotel is close to several restaurants and very close to beach.
Guest house is a few minute walk to the bus for all transport, restaurants, the beach, onsens…all of which I loved. The property was super clean, quiet, and the manager was wonderful with help in learning about the town and getting around. I had a wonderful, restorative stay. With a mini kitchen in the room, this made for an exceptional value.
I arrive hotel late, the staff take me to the restaurant directly when we just arrive the hotel. And wait us finished dinner to do Check-in! And bring us up to our room, very very good service !! And the staff give good suggestions for us to visit famous spot around the area !!
Service at the hotel was impeccable! From organising pick-up and dropping us to various places around Shirahama, the staff tried their best to meet our needs. Kumia-san in particular, was not only conversant in English, but would communicate via whatsapp for needed changes.
Now that is a real Japanese Ryokan. From the outside it looks very old (balconny) but it is really clean and taking care of. The bath are realy japanese onsen and it was great.
Very easy to call a Taxi and it is 2 minutes from one of nicest beach in my life
The hotel was in a beautiful location next to the ocean. We had ocean views which were lovely. The breakfast and dinner buffets had lots of choices of both Japanese and Western foods. The heated infinity pool was a nice treat in October.
The guesthouse Shirahama was quiet and very comfortable because it had a Japanese home atmosphere. And the host was very kind. The location is only 5 minutes from Shirahama Beach. If I go to Shirahama again, I want to stay there again.
Very nice hotel with extremely authentic Japanese culture experience. It is an old building but can meet all the modern needs. The bath area is unique and big, the hot spring is comfortable. It was a wonderful experience.
The best point was the location. It’s right next to the beach therefore it is just a short walk to enjoy swimming in the sea as well as viewing the sea from my room. The onsen and food were also very nice.
The hotel is run by a very friendly lady who tried to help in every way, the breakfast was very delicious and served ryokan-style. The room was super spacious. Amazing offer.
