Hotel Colonial Villavieja features an outdoor swimming pool, garden, a shared lounge and terrace in Villavieja. The property has a bar, as well as a restaurant serving local cuisine. This hotel has rooms all around a central court yard. The restaurant is in the court yard and there are beautiful plants which attract birds and give an overall look of freshness. The restaurant has powerful fans which help with the heat. Our room had an aircon, which is rare for Villavieja and Tatacoa. The beds were comfortable and although there is only cold water, it was no problem because of the heat in this area. The breakfast consisted of fruit juice, toast and eggs made to order, and coffee. It was nice and more than enough. We had lunch once and dinner twice at the hotel's restaurant and the food was delicious. We also had very good cocktails. The restaurant is open all day till 10 pm. They also have an ice cream fridge where you can buy different delicious ice creams any time of day. The staff were very friendly and helpful and some of them do speak English. We asked them to arrange our transport from Neiva airport to the hotel and to arrange a tuk tuk and guide to take us to the Grey dessert and Red dessert the day after our arrival (our only full day in Villavieja). Yeison Medina waited for us at the airport when we arrived late on a Sunday night and transported us to the hotel. He also happened to be our guide for the dessert trips. He is a professional guide at the observatory as well and he was very knowledgeable about the geology, the history and the fauna and flora of the dessert. He spoke English well enough, he was very funny and full of jokes and we had a wonderful day with him. He was also a magician with a cell phone and took very creative photos of us in the dessert. We will remember him every time we look at our holiday photos. Hotel Villavieja is definitely the obvious choice if you plan to visit the Tatacoa dessert. Don't bother to find a tuk tuk on the square or anywhere else for dessert tours, just ask the hotel to arrange it for you and hope that Yeison Medina is your guide.

We arrived at 10 pm and they arranged a tour for us for the next day, including a private guide. In the morning they were so kind to make us a lunch package as we were leaving early. A really beautiful hotel built on the edge of the Magdalena river canyon that let us have breathtaking morning views. We had two large rooms with comfortable beds and clean private bathrooms. Very friendly and hospitable owners, family that lives at the place as well, who picked us up in the town after arrival in the night and gave us a ride back to explore the town and the archeological sites on the next day. Thank you so much for the lovely stay and for lending me your bike for free for the whole day. Looking forward to coming back one day and staying longer.

It is on the central square but all rooms are set back from the street if you have sensitive hearing.

This is a nice little city ideally situated to reach other locations of interest in Huila, for example San Agustín, Desierto de Tatacoa, Rivera etc. For me, as a Spanish student visiting from Bogotá, the people have been very friendly and I have been able to improve my language skills considerably. The place itself is very pretty, with nice collection of impressive statues scattered around the city, especially along the banks of the Magdalena River.

Beautiful rooms and exceptional gardens in a relatively peaceful location looking over San Augustin. It even has its own tiny but beautiful chapel. Enjoying a beer on our private balcony watching humming birds darting around the flowers in the late afternoon is a great memory. The restaurant was simple but excellent with very friendly staff. The weather allowed is to eat outside for both breakfast and dinner with lovely views. Their laundry service was very quick and efficient.

Great location: in the center of the town, with a lot of eateries around. The owner of the hotel Luis was extremely helpful. He helped me book tours (with no surcharge!), gave me local insider’s information on where to eat, what to see, how to get from A to B etc. Great price!

It was clean with a comfortable bed and beautiful facilities. There's AC and hot water. It has double glazing. The pool and the gym are open long time. Now they offer breakfast inside the hotel (2022), so the criticism about that aspect is over.
